Thought of the day

Today listlessly surfing the internet, came across this Youtube video  美少女时代. Initially, I was amused by the idea of showing a before and after makeup shot. Most of the contestants seemed to deal with the criticism with a fair amount of gutso until the last contestant, who began sobbing uncontrollably that she was 'ugly without makeup', 'will not look someone straight in the eye without makeup', 'no self esteem or confidence without makeup'... And to hear some of the criticism from the hosts and judges, which were quite inappropriate... I guess, one could argue that such a reality TV show follows the vein of beauty pageants. At least, pageants are more civilized. To add salt to the injury, most these contestants are probably only 14-15 years old...

Quite honestly, I really don't understand who in their right mind would enter a competition like that. As much as I like makeup, there is much more to a person than their appearance. Personality adds a glow to one's face that even Guerlain's Meteorites cannot compete with... Btw, the prize if you are voted the ugliest, is a MAC makeup set...

The thing that infuriates me is the exploitation of the girl's foibles and ignorance as a source of entertainment, especially on national television. I honestly cannot understand how a parent would allow their child enter such a competition, especially at such a young age. They're only teenagers, still growing, self-esteem is at the most frail. Despite the pimples, uncontrollable sebum production, awkwardness of teenage years, nothing can fake the glow of youth... A wise person once told me, ' God does your makeup when you're in your teens, after that, you've got to do it yourself every single day...'
